January’s numbers are in. The losses mount on lower revenues. More of the same. To say that the pre-planning and operations since the opening have been poor is an understatement. Where else would such a a performance be tolerated.
We were told that the people hired by the Board were experienced. Experienced at what??? We have been deceived. It is well past the time to cut bait and be responsible with the property owners money. IT IS OUR MONEY being lost month in and month out.
This Board and all involved in the management should be ashamed. How can this be justified? These kind of results demand change and change now!

Food and Beverage Update – Jim Story reviewed the financial results for the
New Year’s Eve Party and the Comedy Night Event. The former had a loss of
approximately $4,000 while the latter had a slight profit. We tried to discern what
was learned from these two events. It was established that there is a capacity
limit of approximately 150 attendees for events with entertainment. Consequently
it is difficult to make any money when entertainment such as Banks and Shane is
costing us $35 to $40 per attendee on top of the cost of food and service. The
charges have to be well over $100 a head to meet all of these costs. From a
philosophical perspective the committee agreed that since events of this nature
are restricted to 150 attendees, hardly a broad base of the community, it is
important that they be fully priced to be profitable at best and break even at
worst. If there is not sufficient community response to events with this pricing,
then they are not necessary.
Shouldn’t someone know that we would have a limit of 150 attendees? Wouldn’t the management have an idea of how much the entertainment would cost? Is it asking too much of a professional staff to know how much food and labor will cost? Couldn’t someone add up these expenses and divide by the number of people attending?
There is just no excuse for the rampant incompetence and money wasting by our leaders. With the January F&B subsidy at $70,000 (plus another $26,000 for the clubhouse) we will have used up the budgeted subsidy in less than two more months. What then? Sales are down and expenses continue to soar. Is anybody awake at the board?
Well, no hope now for getting rid of this useless position. Roger Klask has just been named GM and it was his brilliant idea, supported “110 percent” by Big Canoe’s own financial genius who is now president of the board. Remember, he is the one who said the amenities weren’t being subsidized, even as the F and B and Clubhouse Management fiascos were approaching a combined loss of $1 million last year. Same reasoning that goes with the Sconti rebuild being on budget.
Heaven help us. No one else will.
The growing chatter is that people are tiring of the constant excuses from this ‘experienced team’ we have running the F&B (starting with the Director of Amenities).
The inabililty to ‘price an event’ like New Years eve is ridiculous and frankly inexcusable. This is not the conduct of an experienced team.
To rack up these kinds of losses with the sales volume since the opening is just incompetence or theft.
The comparisons to a ‘private club’ as an excuse for the terrible financial performance makes many realize the Board has made another terrible choice in hiring this team. This Team who we constantly hear have experience obviously haven’t experienced success. Who is this guy kidding (is his connection to this position a prior relationship with Klask?)…Big Canoe is not a private club…it is a communitiy of homeowners.
Memo to the POA Board: It is time to get a new line up. This is a team of incompetence. The money you continue to lose is REAL money!!!! It is OUR money!!!!!!!!!!
You chose to retain Klask. Roger is a nice guy but it is a blown opportunity. I have heard many opine that he was retained because the initial plan of elevating the Director of Amenities would be met with disdain from even the most mild mannered. And another bit of conjecture is that bringing in someone from the outside would have risked the unmasking of many hidden POA Board secrets, etc.
The Klask decision does make you wonder…
